Nicoletta Pirozzi

Nicoletta Pirozzi is the Head of the ‘EU, politics and institutions’ Programme and Institutional Relations Manager at the IAI. There she works mainly on EU governance, policy and institutional developments in CFSP/CSDP, civilian crisis management, EU relations with the United Nations and the African Union. She graduated in Political Science at the University of Pisa and at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa. She also obtained an MSc Degree in European Political and Administrative Studies from the College of Europe (Bruges) and a PhD in Institutions and Politics from the Catholic University in Milan.

    The Civilian CSDP Compact – A success story for the EU’s crisis management Cinderella?

    The civilian dimension of the EU’s CSDP has traditionally played a Cinderella-like role in the EU crisis management system. And like the original fairy tale, it seems that civilian CSDP will need three essential elements to succeed: (1) a renewed and credible strategic framework – the ‘ball gown’; (2) adequate operational capabilities – the ‘pumpkin carriage’; and (3) a solid commitment by relevant stakeholders – the ‘Prince Charming’.

    EU support to African security architecture: funding and training components

    During the last few years, African countries have multiplied their efforts at consolidating regional integration and developing common mechanisms for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts. The African Peace and Security Architecture is an emerging set of norms, structures, capacities and procedures established to help the African Union carry out peace and security tasks. This paper analyses the EU’s support to this security architecture, focusing on financial and training aspects.
