Building security in the Sahel: European, regional and local approaches

The European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) organised this conference as part of the activities held under the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It sought to bring together stakeholders from the Sahel region, European and international policymakers and experts. Speakers included the UN Special Envoy for the Sahel, the African Union High Representative for the Sahel and the EU Special Representative for the Sahel.   The discussions revolved around four topics:

• Security challenges in and around the Sahel;
• Common challenges and common interests (African and European perspectives);
• Capacity-building: how effective is the EU?'
• Engaging with regional and local partners: what prospects?
